TOM MESCHERY: You could take one look at Johnny Neumann and know he never should have left school early. Signing kids like that was one of the things the ABA did that was very destructive. Neumann had skills, and in terms of pure shooting he may have been better than Maravich and Rick Mount. He had the ability to be a great player, the athletic 6-foot-6 guard who could score and pass. But he was so immature and he never did grow up.

BOB RYAN: I saw Neumann play as a rookie and he had the worst case of acne I had ever seen on a pro. That just shows you how young he was. He had an absolutely gorgeous jump shot, but with him it will always be a Paradise Lost story.

BOB BASS: I had Johnny in his second year and he owned seven cars. He also had a stock car with his name on it. He had blown nearly all of his money. Charlie Finley and I worked with him and got him down to three cars by the end of the season. He had a lot of friends and relatives around him and he was always giving them money, buying them things.

He was the kind of player who drives coaches crazy. He obviously was a scorer, but he didn’t hold up his end on defense, nor would he create shots for his teammates. Everything was just for Johnny. I was all over him about this and one night he just got tired of hearing it. He went out and did nothing but pass—and he got 19 assists and we won the game. He showed me that he could flat-out pass, that he could be a great point guard if he felt like it. But the thing about Johnny Neumann was that he only felt like playing the game his way.
